Functional Therapy is possibly the best form of therapy available where the client gets a full understanding of how their body functions and help increase their rate of recovery from injuries and decrease any prolonged aches and pains that are caused in the work environment or exercise. The best way to describe Functional Therapy would be a mixture of Personal Training, Physiotherapy and Chiropractor. Where as with Physiotherapy and Chiroractor most of the muscle and joint manipulation is done by the therapist. 90% of Functional Therapy is done by the client. This then anables the muscles and other soft tissues to adapt more to the physiological stresses and increase their strength and rate of recovery.
We look at the the whole body movement through function to see what maybe influencing peoples goals, increase the chances of injuries and optimise sporting performence. This also could be applied to everyday tasks in the working and home environment. The aim of FT is to take the stress away from an Injured area to provide the client with more comfort and increase the rate of recovery.
Do I have to be fit to have Functional Therapy?
Not at all, dont worry you wont even have to raise your breathing rate or even get sweaty!! You can even do it in your comfy clothing and no gym kit. Some of the clients that have FT have had a very basic level of fitness, but have seen big improvments and rates of recovery by applying the simple science of movement.
Where do FT sessions take place?
Sessions can be conducted in the comfort of your own home or even the work environment.
Functional Therapy is also available through Personal Insurance claims. For more details about this then call 07966054419
Here is how Functional Therapy has helped...
``I decided to enter to do the Cardiff Half Marathon this year (2010) as a challenge to myself. Training started well to begin with and I didn’t have any problems but after a couple of weeks of constant running I started to get problems with my ankle. I got introduced to Ollie through a mutual friend and decided to get the help I needed as the ankle injury was beginning to affect my training. Ollie identified the problem that I had and from this started training through functional therapy. He taught me how different stretches and movements with my body could help with my ankle injury. I only had a few sessions with Ollie before my marathon but noticed that after the few sessions I had, I didn’t feel any pain in my ankle and felt that I could fully run without strain. Ollie really helped and was even there to support us on the day, without the training I don’t think I would have been able to complete the half marathon. Thanks ol!``
Sarah Chung, Cardiff.
Sarah worked really hard to get to achieve her goal. We found that her ankle injury was not only caused by limited mobilisaion of the ankle joint, but limited movements (Internal Rotation) at the Hips and Lateral Flexion at the Thoracic Spine (Upper Body).
This may sound strange, but through Functional Therapy we can diagnose that a shoulder injury could be caused by the ankle joint and vice versa for example.

``I heard about Functional Therapy before but never really understood what it was all about. I recently was involved in an accident that left me with a shoulder Injury through whiplash. After meeting with Ollie he explained that the Whiplash though caused by an external force was the weak point of many limited Functional movements. Even though I was feeling pain in my Left shoulder, Ollie picked up straight away there was limited movement in my right ankle and right hip. Once he explained how other parts of the body can stress others, it made sense to me that this was the cause of my stress and pain in my shoulder. After just the first session of treatment I noticed a massive difference in not only my recovery where the pain had disappeared, but how I managed to improve on my fitness. I have been doing Boxing for many years and now my technique has improved dramatically as a result. Not only that, Ollie has taught me new training techniques to improve on my overall functional movement.``
